Why So Obsessed?
Pre-Celiac diagnosis, I
lived on Quaker Lower Sugar Instant Oatmeal. Post-Celiac diagnosis, I still
live on oatmeal – but of course, I had to find a gluten free alternative.
Now, 80% of my panic
attacks are attributed to realizing I’ve run out of this stuff – Eco Planet
Instant Hot Cereal. I’m partial (read: addicted) to the Apples & Cinnamon
flavor, but they also offer Maple & Brown Sugar, and Original. Regardless
of the variety, they collectively kick regular oatmeal’s ass. Beyond whole
oats, this cereal also has buckwheat, sorghum, brown rice, amaranth, quinoa
(!), and millet. It’s a veritable whole grains party! The overall texture is a
bit finer than what you may be used to, but I find it much more enjoyable. You can read more about it here.
So Where Can I Get It?
I’ve had trouble
consistently finding it in stores, so I buy it online. Eco Planet sells it
directly on their website, but I’ve found it to be cheaper via Amazon. Through
the link below, it’s $5.21/box of 6 packs. Shipping is $4.99, so I always order
the maximum # of boxes – which is 6.
PS. This is part of a new column aptly called Gluten Sucks, This Doesn't. Each week or two I'll bring you one gluten free staple that I absolutely, positively cannot live without. And - where you can get it! These are not sponsored, and I have grocery receipts/cabinets full of the stuff to prove it ;)
Since you are posting about gluten free oats, I have to ask, what is your take on the "gluten-free or not" oats controversy? My whole family is celiac and/or gluten intolerant and some of us can handle the oats, but others cannot. Do they ever bother you?
ReplyDeleteI only eat oats that are certified gluten free (like these + Bob's), and I've never had any issues. That being said, I haven't tried non-GF certified oats (like Quaker) - but I 'm not going to risk it any time soon!
DeleteI need to find this stuff! I'm currently in France and just found the most amazing (super crunchy!) German gluten-free muesli! Should I fill a suitcase?
ReplyDeleteOoohh I think I need that!! Filling a suitcase with food sounds all too familiar haha. How is being GF in France? I've traveled abroad but it was all pre-Celiac...
DeleteIt's challenging, but becoming more common here as well. Apparently there's even a gluten-free bakery in Paris! Restaurants are challenging (never know what's in the sauces) but I'm usually careful and go for a salad or something I know is safe! I like to make up for it by enjoying the wonderful dairy here - the cheese and yogurt are so good!
Deletethey have this at the fairway on the upper east side! i think it was $4.99 a box :)
ReplyDeleteThank you for turning me on to this most delightful breakfast food! This morning I mashed a banana, added a packet of the hot cereal, a tablespoon each of flax seed and agave, some additional cinnamon...microwaved it for 90 seconds in a bowl (sprayed with cooking spray) and had an on-the-go oatmeal cake for breakfast!
ReplyDeleteThat's brilliant! Trying this as soon as my next shipment comes :) Ran out of oatmeal the other day and just about freaked out. Yikes.
DeleteGreat post and really very impressive one to read.
